Md. teen’s ‘promposal’ becomes YouTube sensation

WASHINGTON – High school senior Bobby Chin didn’t let fear stand in his way when it was time to secure a prom date. The Baltimore teen knew who he wanted to ask and he knew how he wanted to ask her.

“I met Sophia in the beginning of our senior year,” he says. “What really attracted me to her was how well she was dressed, how funny she was and how she had a great personality.”

Chin says he was inspired to write a song for Sophia one day during music technology class. He enlisted the help of a good friend with guitar skills and set out to plan the perfect “promposal.”

It took about two days to write and practice the serenade. It was actually the second time Chin asked Sophia to prom because the first time just wasn’t exciting enough, he says.

“I realized I didn’t want to ask her in a bland way,” he says. “I decided, ‘I’m going to spice something up and get you by surprise.'”

Surprised she was. In the video, Sophia can be seen smiling and covering her face as Chin launches into his rendition of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.”

The video became an instant hit, and has already received more than 1.8 million views on YouTube as of Monday afternoon.

Chin isn’t alone in his desire to impress. Many “promposals” have gone viral in recent years, with teens performing songs, dances and skits to get the perfect date.
