WASHINGTON – Some families could lose the roof over their heads because of government cutbacks.

Congress responded to the federal government’s deep debt by implementing automatic across-the-board spending cuts called the sequester. As a result, some people may be in danger of losing their homes.

The Gazette reports that if local housing authorities fail to absorb the shortfalls, as many as 32,000 families could lose their vouchers to live in government-provided housing.

A conference on government housing has been told that the Department of Housing and Urban Development will have $2 billion less to spend this year, $1 billion of which will come from the vouchers program.
