Vehicle drives off Arlington Memorial Bridge

WASHINGTON – U.S. Park Police say the Memorial Bridge was closed for several hours after a vehicle drove off the bridge into the Potomac River.

Police say the unidentified driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. The accident occurred about 10 p.m. Sunday night.

Sgt. Paul Brooks says the vehicle crashed through a barrier on the Virginia side of the bridge. Police say it was not immediately clear why the sport utility vehicle left the roadway. The bridge was re-opened about 2:30 a.m. Monday.
