WASHINGTON – What do couples fight about most? Money!
Okay, sex is up there too, but money was number one, according to my informal poll of women on the street.
“Even after the proposal and in marriage, it’s one of the most contentious issues,” says Larry Bodine, editor-in-chief of Lawyers.com.
That’s why Bodine suggests sitting down with a lawyer before saying “I do.”
He says marriage is more than a merger of hearts and spirits, it’s also a financial merger. This means someone else has their hands in your bank account, IRA, savings, real estate and back pocket.
Bodine says it’s a good idea to get a prenuptial agreement when either partner has a significant amount of assets or debt.
As he explained to me, when you get married without a prenup, you may be responsible for your significant others debt, and who needs that?
But come on Larry. Where is the romance?
“It is unromantic,” Bodine admits, “but it has to do with good financial planning.”
And in this day and age, it does pay to be smart.
