WASHINGTON – Celebrate Presidents Day weekend with a three-day tax break on some purchases.
Maryland is exempting certain Energy Star items from the state’s 6 percent sales tax Feb. 16 through Feb. 18.
It mostly covers larger items such as clothes washers, air conditioners, heat pumps and standard-size refrigerators, and also applies to compact fluorescent light bulbs and programmable thermostats.
The Department of Energy dropped the Energy Star labeling for thermostats on Dec. 31, 2009. If items in stock carry the label, then the tax break applies.
Virginia’s next sales tax break starts Memorial Day weekend and lasts an entire week. May 25 through May 31, the commonwealth’s 5 percent sales tax won’t be applied to some hurricane and emergency preparedness equipment including generators costing less than $1,000.
