Tips for biking to the inauguration

WASHINGTON – Road closures and crowded Metro stations are encouraging some inauguration participants to commute to the weekend’s festivities on two wheels.

For those choosing to take to a bike this weekend, Advocacy Coordinator for the Washington Area Bicyclist Association Greg Billing offers some advice.

  • Be patient. Billing says there will be a lot of people traveling around the city this weekend that may be lost.
  • Share the road. Some roadways are open to pedestrians only so bikers may find they’ll be sharing the streets. Outside of the business district, riding on the sidewalk is legal. If you do take your bike on a sidewalk, remember to be courteous to walkers.

    • The DC Department of Transportation will set up bike parking at 16th and I streets NW. These parking stations can accommodate up to 700 bikes; bring your own lock.
