Prince George’s County wins with Redskins

WASHINGTON – A Redskins win Sunday night won’t just be a boost for fans, it will also help the local economy.

If the Redskins best the Dallas Cowboys, and guarantee them home field advantage for a wildcard playoff game in January — sending additional tax revenues to the county’s coffers.

Tom Himler, Prince George’s deputy chief administrative officer for Budget, Finance and Administration, tells Channel 7 that each home game brings in about $500,000. The extra funds would be used for school and road improvements.

Forbes magazine ranked the Redskins as the NFL’s second most valuable franchise, behind only the Cowboys, in 2011. The magazine reported the franchise raked in $373 million through merchandise and ticket sales last year and as of July 2012 is worth $1.56 billion.
