With ultimate gift card, Starbucks sells exclusivity

WASHINGTON – Looking for the perfect present for the coffee lover in your life? Starbucks has a great option, if you’re willing to shell out some big bucks.

The Starbucks Metal Card is what USA Today calls a “super premium gift card,” costing $450 and made of, as its name implies, metal — steel, to be precise.

Starbucks is making 5,000 such cards this holiday season, but they aren’t for sale at the ubiquitous coffee shops. The cards can only be purchased at the luxury website Gilt.com, says USA Today.

The Metal Card is good for $400 worth of coffee — the extra $50 covers the cost the card itself — and comes with special benefits, such as free refills on coffee and tea and certain gifts.

USA Today reports the card’s exclusivity is what appeals and that it could end up a collector’s item.
