CBS projects U.S. Senate race for Kaine

WASHINGTON – CBS News is projecting that Democrat Tim Kaine has won election to the U.S. Senate over Republican George Allen in Virginia.

With 2,152 of 2,588 precincts reporting at about 10:30 p.m., Kaine held a slim lead over Allen with 50.16 percent of the vote to Allen’s 49.65 percent, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections. CBS made the call for Kaine at about 10:20 p.m.

The two former Virginia governors waged an expensive campaign to replace retiring Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat.

Allen conceded the race to Kaine shortly before 11 p.m.
