Va. police: Two people killed in plane crash near Shannon Airport

WASHINGTON – Two people were killed in a plane crash in Spotsylvania County near Shannon Airport Saturday evening.

John Morton Jr., 48, of Stafford, was working on a Cessna 150M single-engine plane, taking off from and landing at Shannon Airport, according to Virginia State Police. While Morton was testing the plane during one of these exercises, the plane suddenly fell, hitting a tree as it crashed.

The plane went down around 5:30 p.m. in the River Heights Mobile Home Park off Carrie Court, fredericksburg.com reports.

Morton and his son, 13-year-old Kyle Morton of Stafford, both died at the scene, police say. No one on the ground was injured and no nearby residences were hit.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration also investigated the incident. State police say their investigation is still ongoing.
