Reston Zoo director found guilty of drowning a wallaby

WASHINGTON – The director of the Reston Zoo was found guilty Friday of drowning a wallaby.

Meghan Mogensen, 26, of Silver Spring has been sentenced to about 30 days in jail and fined more than $1,000. Her attorney says they will appeal the jail sentence.

Mogensen says she euthanized the injured wallaby by lethal injection, but authorities say the zoo did not have the proper permits or training to give the euthanasia drug to the animal.

The director was arrested in June with charges of animal cruelty and possesion of a controlled substance.
