Solution, completion may be near for Silver Spring hub

WASHINGTON – Montgomery County may know by the end of the month when construction on the $112 million Silver Spring Transit Center will be finished.

The Washington Post reports the three-story structure has been under construction since 2008 and buffeted by setbacks, including problems with utility work and allegations that workers improperly poured concrete in the building.

The contractor has said the building is structurally sound, but both the company and the county say the concrete needs to be fixed. They disagree on a solution, and a third-party company has assessed the situation and will brief county staffers next week.

The Post reports that county officials say they will not announce a new opening date until a solution is found.

The estimated cost of the center – which was first promised by Montgomery County officials more than a decade ago – is more than three times the original estimate.
