Truck crashed into Bay Bridge wall during storm

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A tractor-trailer crashed into a jersey wall on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge during Friday night’s powerful thunderstorms, in which winds approached 80 mph.

The truck did not fall off the bridge following the collision, says State Transportation Secretary Beverly Swaim-Staley.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police say the driver suffered injuries that are non life-threatening and was taken to a hospital.

Police temporarily shut down both spans of the bridge.

Crews are checking scaffolding on the bridge, which had been installed for maintenance work, to make sure it’s stable and intact.

Swaim-Staley says Charles and Montgomery counties appear to have been the hardest hit. She says there are about 500 traffic lights out in Montgomery County.
