WASHINGTON – Know your material. That’s the advice from an air guitar champion when asked how to choose the perfect song to perform.

“Most people are going to choose what they like and what they feel,” says Lance Kasten, Air Guitar Hall of Fame member told WTOP.

“If you don’t feel the song, you’re not going to be any good,” says Kasten.

Some choose songs based on a riff they can pantomime. “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie comes to mind.

Others prefer a song that isn’t centered around a riff but which affords better chances for headbanging. Think “Song 2” by Blur.

Catchy songs without guitar fireworks — along the lines of “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits — pose challenges for a would-be air guitarist.

Heavy metal riffs are often chosen. “Panama” by Van Halen and “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by Scorpions are on many air guitar playlists.
