End in sight for some National Mall projects

WASHINGTON – There’s an end in sight for two of the construction projects that have taken over key spots on the National Mall.

Engineers expect the new reflecting pool by the Lincoln Memorial will be completed by the first week in August, says Stephen Whitesell, regional director of the National Park Service’s National Capital Region.

Whitesell also told a House Natural Resources subcommittee hearing Friday that the work on the grass between Third Street and Seventh Street is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.

There will be more construction to come, though.

“The current work on the mall turf is only a portion of (what’s) envisioned for that project,” Whitesell said.

“We’re in the process of developing the plans for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Washington Monument which, of course, was damaged by last year’s earthquake,” he added.
