WASHINGTON – Disagreement continues over a memorial planned for the 34th president.

Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, says the family is still unhappy with a redesign of the memorial which is planned for a site at Maryland and Independence in D.C.

In a statement released on her website, Eisenhower says her family doesn’t like the metal scrims that will include tapestries depicting scenes from the president’s life and serve as a backdrop to the memorial. She says they are vulnerable urban conditions, including wildlife incursions.

Private funds are being raised to build the memorial but a congressional committee has expressed concern that further delays could cost an additional $16 million.

A controversial statue of Eisenhower as a boy has already been scrapped in favor of of one depicting him as a young cadet.
