Area schools rank high in top 1,000 list

WASHINGTON – More than two dozen area schools are on a new best high schools list put out by Newsweek and The Daily Beast.

On the list of the 1,000 best schools, Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County ranked tenth out of the 2,300 schools across the country that answered a survey by Newsweek and The Daily Beast.

The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky came in first on the list, followed by The School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet in Dallas.

In all, 26 high schools in the Washington region made the list.

George Mason High in Falls Church checked in at No. 45.

All the schools were ranked on on-time graduation rates, percentage of graduates who head to college and Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and SAT test scores.

Poolesville High in Montgomery County was the top Maryland school on the list at No. 81.

Thirteen other schools from Northern Virginia, eight others from Montgomery County and two from Howard County also made the top 1,000.

D.C. had two schools on the list, with Banneker High checking in at No. 192.
