Negotiating tips for raise-seekers

WASHINGTON – A recent LinkedIn survey shows that while many professionals are uncomfortable negotiating salary, employers expect the conversation.

LinkedIn surveyed more than 2,000 professionals in eight countries and found that 35 percent report feeling anxious or frightened negotiating, 34 percent feel confident, 10 percent find the discussion exciting and 10 percent are indifferent.

The study also finds that men are more confident negotiating at work than women by 11 percentage points.

For those unsure of their negotiating skills, Fox Business offers some tips:

Do your homework: research salaries in your industry by using tools such as Careerbuilder, PayScale or GetRaised.

Rely on facts: “A case based on facts is difficult to refute,” says Fox Business. Remember praise from clients, peers or superiors to showcase your position.

Have a dress rehearsal Practicing with a mentor can help you find holes in your argument and ensure you present a strong case.
