Alexandria Planning Commision OKs controversial plan for West End

ALEXANDRIA – New transportation and development plans moved a step closer to reality this week for a neighborhood in Alexandria.

Alexandria’s Planning Commission approved Wednesday what’s known as the Beauregard Small Area Plan, after a public hearing where many residents begged them to reconsider.

The plan would reshape the area in the city’s West End by building rapid transit station, a new grocery story, parks, office buildings and shopping.

However, the plan also calls for demolishing affordable housing in the area. The plan only calls for some affordable housing to be available in the area once the redevelopment is complete.

See an overview of the plan here.

The plan now goes to the city council, which will hold a public hearing on Saturday May 12. Find details of that meeting here.
