Cyclist killed in Montgomery County crash

WASHINGTON – Montgomery County police are investigating what led to a crash that killed a bicyclist in Olney, Md.

Police say Diane Whitman, 48, of Montgomery Village, was headed eastbound on Olney Laytonsville Road near Zion Road at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when she was hit by a Toyota Camry going the same direction.

Whitman was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Camry has been identified as Heather Simmons, 30, of Damascus, Md. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Whitman worked as a medical technician at Montgomery General Hospital, and was an avid cyclist who regularly commuted by bike from her home. She had two grown children.
