Man arrested after bat attack at Hyattsville daycare

WASHINGTON – A 26-year-old man is in custody after beating a security guard at a Hyattsville daycare center Thursday.

Prince George’s County Police say the suspect, Mickel Tyrone Young, entered “It’s a Family Affair” daycare in the 300 block of Morgan Boulevard around 10:30 a.m.

Young became violent after staff members refused to let him use their phone. A security guard on site retrieved a bat, which Young took and used to beat the security guard, leaving him with serious injuries.

Young left the daycare, but returned a short time later and took the bat again and used it to break the windows of the daycare.

He then took an employee’s car keys and drove off.

Police say Young appeared to be on some sort of drugs or alcohol when the found him near FedEx Field.

At the police station, Young kicked a hole in the wall of his holding cell and injured three officers who tried to restrain him.

Young was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

Police say no children at the daycare saw the incident or were hurt.

The security guard is in stable condition with serious head injuries.
