WASHINGTON – Traffic congestion is no longer confined to morning and afternoon rush hour, or even daylight hours thanks to overnight construction projects.

The projects, which are happening all over the region, can create traffic jams on some major roadways in the middle of the night.

“What you have now is congestion 24 hours a day, seven days a week because of this,” AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend tells the Washington Examiner.

As bad as the nighttime traffic jams can be, officials tell the Examiner it would only be worse if they were trying to do the work during the day.

And as bad as it is now, officials say it will get worse during the summer — when road work will be on some of the area’s busiest roads — like the Beltway, I-66, New York Avenue in D.C. and Rockville Pike in Maryland.
