WASHINGTON – The passout game, the California choke, and roulette are just a few of the names given to a deadly game played among preteens and teens.

But it’s more commonly known as the choking game, and it’s when individuals attempt to get high by cutting off oxygen to their brain, which can end in loss of consciousness. The high comes as the oxygen returns to the brain.

Many use their hands, ropes, belts, or other noose-like materials.

Georgina, a Bethesda High School student, says she first heard of the game from her driving instructor.

“They get a fifteen second — or less than that — euphoria to their head. Some kids, they become unconscious then they regain consciousness and then they feel the high,” she says.

A recent study done by the Pediatrics Journal shows that 6 percent of eighth graders in Oregon have played the game at least once. Sixty-four percent have played more than once.

Seizures, concussions and death are just a few of the risks related to playing the choking game, experts say.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, warning signs that suggest a person may be playing the game include marks on the neck, bloodshot eyes, wearing high-necked shirts in warm temperatures and nooses or noose-like material tied to furniture or doors.

YouTube has become the No. 1 platform for kids to share videos of themselves playing the dangerous game.
