Break from Metro work over, riders can expect delays soon

WASHINGTON – Metro riders have been enjoying a “spring break” from the tedious trackwork that can lead to big delays — but that break is about to end.

Starting next week, Monday, April 16, midday track work comes back to the schedule. On Friday night, April 20, the weekend trackwork starts again.

“The system is 36 years old,” says Metro’s Rail Chief Dave Kubicek. “It’s been a great system that’s run for a lot of years. But now you have to start doing a lot of work.”

Stations, railcars and tracks are all being rehabbed in what Metro leaders call the “biggest single undertaking since the construction of the system itself.”

“It’s everything across the board,” says Kubicek.
