Thumbs up? Up yours! A guide to misconstrued gestures

WASHINGTON – Watch out the next time you travel. That hand sign that means “10-4 good buddy” in this country could land you jail time abroad, or worse: a gang of newly-enlightened cuckolds chasing after you.

A guide put together by PimsleurApproach lists seven hand gestures common in the United States that would be considered very rude in certain foreign countries.

Greece takes top honors for offensiveness with three of the seven applying to their people.

One of the most surprising is the common “Hook ’em horns” symbol University of Texas fans employ by raising their pointer and pinky fingers while holding the middle two down with the thumb. First daughter Jenna Bush once whipped out this move to demonstrate her homeland affiliation to a group of Norwegians. Little did she know this “cuckold” sign implies the recipient’s spouse is unfaithful.
