Loud booms, shaking ground in So. Md. came from Navy base

WASHINGTON – The strange noises in Southern Maryland Tuesday afternoon came from a nearby naval station, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office says.

Area residents reported loud booms and a shaking ground late Tuesday afternoon. It appears to have been caused by routine operations at the U.S. Navy’s Surface Warfare Center at Indian Head, Md., according to the sheriff’s office.

The base is tasked with researching and developing ordnance for the military.
