Fans wish for funnier, big-time sporting events

Big-time sporting events are all about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

But it seems some fans wish they were just a little funnier.

Comedian Will Ferrell’s absurdist starting lineups at a recent New Orleans Hornets basketball game became such a viral video hit, a Facebook page has been set up, calling on the NBA to “double-down” and let the comedian bring his routine to the All Star Game in Orlando Feb. 26.

For those who thought Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. wasn’t enough of a joke, an online petition has been set up for “Weird Al” Yankovic to perform in the middle of next year’s Super Bowl XLVII.

Arguing that nerds are now cool enough to take center stage at the biggest sporting event of the year, the petition reads, “Now is the time to bring one of nerdhood’s heaviest guns to one of America’s most celebrated events.”

The effort has garnered only a few thousand online signatures, well short of its goal of one million, but considering the game isn’t until Feb. 3, 2013, there’s still time.

The “Weird Al” halftime idea is being promoted on Facebook and on Twitter with the hashtag #weirdalsuperbowl.

The petition is hosted on Change.org, the same website where another football fan tried, and failed, to persuade the NFL to replace the Canadian band Nickelback as the halftime entertainment at last Thanksgiving’s Detroit Lions game.
