WASHINGTON – Nearly two dozen new speed cameras have been activated in Prince George’s County and violators will begin receiving tickets soon.
The new locations are an expansion of a speed camera program that began in the county last September. In its first 40 days, speeding in school zones where cameras were located was reduced by almost 50 percent.
“Believe it or not, after you’ve gotten a couple of those tickets, you tend to be aware that you’re speeding,” Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker told WTOP in September.
Baker said the county planned to continue expansion, and hoped to have 72 cameras operating sometime in 2012. This latest expansion will add 24 new locations.
The camera’s operate between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and are activated when they detect a driver traveling 12 or more miles over the speed limit.
The fine for each violation is $40.
