WASHINGTON – If it wasn’t the worst bet in history, it certainly involved the highest stakes.
At the last “Ask the Governor” with Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell in November 2011, WTOP’s Mark Segraves bet the Notre Dame grad that his Terps would beat the Irish in their upcoming game.
Segraves wagered the news scoop if McDonnell made any movement on seeking a nomination as U.S. vice president. McDonnell staked turning the tables on the WTOP reporter for their next segment. Live.
Gulp.
What resulted proved to be a surprisingly insightful interview by the Old Dominion chief executive into the life of one of the Washington area’s most notorious reporters.
Topics ranged from Segraves’ choice in neckwear, to what his children expect from their nation’s leaders.
But the Virginia Republican wasn’t about to leave politics at the door. McDonnell began delving into the reporters’ preference for overseas vacation spots.
“You must be a one-percenter,” McDonnell said of the Segraves’ preference for the Virgin Islands.

As he left the newsroom triumphant, this reporter complimented the governor on the interview. “I might be looking for a job in two years,” he responded.
