Medics drop heart, rush it to waiting patient

WASHINGTON – A broken heart is nothing new, but a fallen heart is something entirely different.

A woman in Mexico City with a congenital heart condition had been waiting two years for a new organ, reports The Guardian. As medics rushed the heart of a 20-year-old who had been killed in a car crash, the unthinkable happened.

The heart — which had traveled 280 miles by ambulance, jet and helicopter — spilled out of a cooler and onto the asphalt as live television crews filmed the accident.

The two men recovered quickly — one grabbed the heart and shoved it back into the cooler.

Officials say the transplant was successful. The woman was recently released from the hospital.
