UNDATED – Here’s a pretty good indication that, well, people are getting too pudgy.
Every time transit agencies decide it’s time for new trains or buses, they need to make sure passengers fit in their seats
New York started its “First All-American Tush Tally” in 1984, according to The New York Times.
The test measured the back-sides of riders to see whether they could fit into new subway cars.
Now, New Jersey Transit has plans to add double-decker train cars that have seats 2 inches wider than the ones in single-deck trains. Those seats are now 17.55 inches wide.
Amtrak plans to introduce designs to accommodate larger sized passengers on at least 25 dining cars starting next year.
Katharine Hunter-Zaworski, director of the National Center for Accessible Transportation at Oregon State University, tells the Times the issue of seat size is becoming a bigger issue because “you can only make the trains so wide.”
