Weekend Wakeup Call – Friday, Dec. 23 to Monday, Dec. 26
WASHINGTON – Drivers won’t find any active construction projects Monday in Maryland and Virginia, as work will be suspended for the holiday.
VDOT will lift HOV restrictions for I-95, I-395 and I-66 on Monday, Dec. 26.
Metro holiday service information
From Metro:
Metro will operate extra afternoon trains on Friday, Dec. 23 for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Christmas holiday weekend.
Metrorail and Metrobus service will operate on a regular weekend schedule on Saturday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 25. (Metrorail will remain open until 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve.)
On the observed holiday — Monday, Dec. 26 — Metrorail will operate between 7 a.m. and midnight, and Metrobus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. No track work is scheduled.
Other Public Transit
- Fairfax Connector buses will run on a normal Saturday schedule on Christmas Eve. They will run on a Sunday schedule on Christmas and Dec. 26.
- ART is running limited routes on a Saturday schedule. Only routes 41, 42, 51 and 87 will run on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day and Monday, Dec. 26, only routes 41 and 51 will run. They will be on Sunday schedules.
VDOT suspends lane closures
VDOT will suspend lane closures from noon Friday, Dec. 23, to noon Tuesday, Dec. 27, and again from noon Friday, Dec. 30, to noon Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.
“We want everyone to arrive safely at their destinations during the year-end holidays,” said VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley. “We are opening lanes where appropriate to increase lane capacity on our interstates and other major roads.”
“I encourage motorists to do their part to keep one another safe by obeying all traffic laws, staying alert and engaged behind the wheel, and being courteous to your fellow motorists.”
While temporary work zones are lifted during the holiday period, VDOT is always prepared to mobilize in case of inclement weather. VDOT will monitor weather forecasts for any snow or ice that could affect travel over the holidays. Its offices and snow-removal equipment will be fully staffed in the event of any accumulation.

The I-95/395 reversible lanes will be open to all traffic:
Southbound from 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 until 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24
Northbound from 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 when HOV-3 takes effect
HOV restrictions on I-95, 395 and 66 are lifted on Monday, Dec. 26
Parking
- Montgomery County parking meters and lots are free on Monday.
- Arlington County will not be enforcing parking meter or time restrictions on Sunday and Monday.
- Alexandria will not enforce parking restrictions at meters or time restrictions in residential areas from Friday through Monday.
- D.C. will not enforce parking meter, residential parking, or rush hour lane restrictions on Monday. Normal meter and other Saturday restrictions apply on Christmas Eve.
