WASHINGTON – Montgomery County’s newest additions to its Ride On fleet are big and shiny and green all over.
The county unveiled the 13 new buses — 12 electric-diesel hybrids and 1 ‘clean diesel’ — Monday in Silver Spring.
The buses, made in the U.S., were funded using $6.6 dollars in American Reinvestment and Recovery Act monies.
Montgomery County has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Public officials say the new buses bring them closer to that goal.
Speaking at the unveiling, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said, “We are building a more sustainable future.”
The new buses will appear on routes that serve Wheaton, Friendship Heights, Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Takoma Park Metro stations.
Ride On carried 26.7 million riders on its 339 buses in 2011.
