Poll: ‘Whatever’ is the most annoying word three years running

WASHINGTON – It’s been nearly 30 years since the movie “Valley Girl” introduced America to the slang used in California’s San Fernando valley.

Teens across the country started interjecting “whatever” and “like” into everyday conversation, and it seems like people across the country are still pretty annoyed with that slang.

For the third year in a row, “whatever” has been named the most annoying word, according to a new Marist Poll.

Nearly four in ten adults (38 percent) said “whatever” was the most annoying word or phrase used in conversation. “Like” came in second, with 20 percent, and “you know” was a close third with 19 percent.

“Just sayin'” came in fourth with 11 percent of the population saying they can’t stand to hear that phrase in conversation, and 7 percent said “seriously” should be banned from conversation.

Five percent said they weren’t sure.
