Mohawks no more: 65 punk rockers lose their locks

WASHINGTON — One buzz cut and a quick dip later, 65 Indonesian punk rockers were saved from a life of moral corruption.

That was the hope, anyway, when police in the country’s conservative province of Banda Aceh raided a punk rock concert and detained fans.

The men were rounded up and stripped of their spiky hair, body piercings, dog-collar necklaces and chain jewelry, and then dunked into pools of water for a “spiritual cleansing,” the Associated Press reports.

Their jeans and T-shirts were also taken away, and the concertgoers were forced to brush their teeth.

The AP reports the crackdown is just the latest effort to enforce strict, Muslim rules in a part of the country where adultery is punishable by stoning to death and homosexuals are often subjected to jail time or public lashings.
