A new farmer’s market opens this month near the Skyland development project in D.C.’s Ward 7.

The market is called DC CHEW (which stands for Community, Harvest, Education in Ward 7. Kind of.). The market will launch Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will host two markets in December and then open full time in the spring, at the intersection of Good Hope Road, Naylor Road and Alabama Ave. SE.

Vendors are still being determined, but will include local retailers like Tuckey’s Mountain Farm, Plum Good and Converge Coffee. D.C. chefs will host cooking demos and give healthy eating tips at the market.

The Skyland development is slated to get a Wal-Mart store eventually, though Safeway is challenging that proposal. It is in an area that some consider a “food desert”, meaning it is hard for residents there to access fresh groceries.
