A new two mile auxiliary lane on Interstate 66 between Fairfax Drive and Sycamore Street is now open in Arlington County. This project is the first of spot improvements that will hopefully reduce some congestion in the area.
The new lane is a lengthening of the acceleration and deceleration lane running between Fairfax Drive and Sycamore Street which now forms a continuous auxiliary lane between the two ramps. The improvement also includes a new 12 foot wide shoulder constructed with full strength pavement that can carry traffic during emergency situations.
Then other planned spot improvements are from Haycock Road to Westmoreland Street, and from Lee Highway to Glebe Road. It is hoped that these additional improvements will also reduce congestion and travel times during peak periods, and perhaps increase safety by lengthening merge areas thus reducing the risk of stop-and-go accidents.
