Dave’s Take: Back to Earth

WASHINGTON – As sure it is Monday, I know that an email from the Redskins team store is on the way to promote a special deal. It has been the one constant in this Redskins’ season.

A week after a win over the Seahawks, the Redskins were grounded against the Jets in a 34-19 loss. Actually grounded is a poor choice of words because the Redskins established the run early, but then failed in the air in the second half.

The Redskins are a team that seems to run away from momentum. Roy Helu finished with 100 yards rushing, but more than 60 of those yards were in the first half. In the second half the offense stalled on three and outs and there was a sense the game would slip away.

At quarterback Rex Grossman reminded us again why he is not a long term answer. A late lost fumble to go with a 19 of 46 day passing added to his resume of disappointment in 2011. Grossman has had 18 turnovers in nine starts.

Good teams do not give up 21 points in the fourth quarter at home. The Jets rallied to close out the Redskins with three touchdowns in a just a little over three minutes. That’s this Redskins’ team. It’s a team that finds a way to lose.

To add to the misery, the Redskins are preparing to go the rest of the season without  Fred Davis and Trent Williams because of suspensions for violation of the NFL’s substance policy. Apparently 11 NFL players had failed drug tests, but only Davis and Williams will miss games because each has tested positive more than once.

There was hope that when Bruce Allen was brought  in as General Manager and Mike Shanahan as head coach, a winning culture would soon follow.  The  loss to the Jets and the drug suspensions have us wondering if, to borrow from Allen’s father George, the future will ever be now.
