WASHINGTON — Sure, D.C. is one of the most expensive cities in the country, but it isn’t all bad. At least some local watering holes offer solace from rent that turns most residents’ pockets inside out.
Though it ranks among America’s costliest cities, you can still find a cheap drink in D.C., according to a new list from viral aggregator BuzzFeed. It includes a Columbia Heights haunt that many regulars say is a hipster version of “Cheers.”
D.C.’s own The Red Derby takes ninth on this nation-wide list. The bar near the intersection of 14th Street and Spring Road describes itself as the local “home of the beer can revolution.” Patrons can purchase cheap drinks, ranging from America’s favorite Pabst Blue Ribbon to more obscure brews like Moo Thunder, for as little as a couple bucks during evening specials.
Customers at the no-keg, cash-only bar enjoy the large collection of board games, as well as an open sound system into which they can plug their iPod. A new roof deck provides an even larger and varied venue for the moustachioed anti-establishment crowd to wash down a Schlitz Tall Boy. Check out this gallery of the saloon’s atmosphere.
New York City’s McSorley’s Old Ale House clinches top honors on the BuzzFeed list. That site also put together a gallery of 1940s Big Apple photos, which includes pictures of the more than 150-year-old dive.
Elbo Room in San Francisco, The Sand Bar & Grill in Honolulu, Zeke’s Roadhouse in Miami and Prince O’ Whales in L.A. round out the top five.
The Wall Street Journal recently ranked D.C. the eight most expensive city in the country, after analyzing living costs in 309 cities nationwide. Washington received a score 47.5 percent higher than the national average.
