WASHINGTON – There are more than 110 bike sharing stations across the D.C. area — and bikes could be coming to Montgomery County to help commuters with their ride to and from the Metro.
Bike sharing is already up and running in D.C., Arlington, and it will soon be in Alexandria.
Montgomery County has 20 planned stations for bikes and is looking to the state to help fund even more.
It will likely cost about $50,000 to add each station and another $25,000 in annual operating costs.
“We find it is very attractive as an alternative to people sometimes thinking that they need to drive or have a car,” says Gary Erinrich with the Montgomery County Department of Public Works.
The county is hoping to add bikes inside the Beltway along both sides of the Red Line from Forest Glenn to Bethesda.
“That means they don’t need to take their bicycles and take them to the Metro and leave them outside all day,” Erinrich says.
The county would like the public’s input on where they would like to see bike share stations. They are holding a meeting 6 to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 29 at the Executive Office Building, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville.
