A furry Black Friday deal for animal lovers

WASHINGTON — The Washington Humane Society launched it’s “Hope for the Holidays” campaign with a Black Friday special that lasts from now until Dec. 31.

Adoption rates are cut in half, and you can get a two-for-one deal on cats and kittens.

But Stephanie Shane, chief operating officer for the Humane Society, says you’re not limited to dogs and cats when looking for your new best friend.

“Dogs, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs — we’ve got all kind of animals and all of them are looking for a new home,” she says.

Last year’s Black Friday special was such a hit that they decided to extend it until the end of the year, according to Shane.

But what about animal lovers who don’t have room for another pet or can’t fit an animal companion into their hectic schedules?

“We have lots of ways that people can help animals, even if they’re not ready to adopt.”

You can sponsor an animal to help pay for vet care, for example. You can help cover the cost of supplies. The Washington Humane Society has a wish list on Amazon.com and you can order an item and have it shipped right away without leaving the comfort of your own home.

If you do adopt during the holidays, there are some guidelines you should follow, Shane says. Try to set up and stick to a schedule for your new best buddy.

“Animals thrive on routine,” she says. “Making sure the dog is walked at the same time each day can help with house training. Making sure the cat is fed at the same time every day helps too.”

So go ahead, run out to the stores and get that big screen TV you’ve been lusting after. And then consider adding a new best friend to hang out on the sofa with you.
