WASHINGTON — One person is dead and six more injured after the driver of a white sedan lost control in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Hyattsville Thursday afternoon.
Officials say two men entered the parking lot around 1:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, but then turned around when they noticed Home Depot was closed. As they started to leave, the driver — a man in his 60s — passed out behind the wheel.
“He had some type of medical condition,” said Hyattsville Police Sgt. Chris Purvis.
The car swerved into six pedestrians who were standing on a grassy island. The vehicle’s passenger tried to regain control of the sedan after the striking the men, but crashed into a brick wall instead.
The driver and six victims were transported to a local hospital. One man, a 38-year-old male, died from his injuries.
The parking lot is often used by day laborers looking for work, said a man at the scene looking for his brother. The man does not know if his brother was among those hit by the car.
The accident is under investigation.
