BETHESDA, Md. – The Montgomery County Planning board is asking the state to think about moving the Purple Line’s proposed Bethesda station to accommodate the a tunnel used by the Capital Crescent Trail.
All along state planners have painted a picture of harmony between the capital crescent trail from Georgetown to Silver Spring and the future purple line light rail from Silver Spring to Bethesda.
But now trail users are learning that the tunnel beneath Wisconsin won’t fit both both the trains and the joggers, bikers and walkers on the trail.
County planners are asking the state to make changes to the rail route, or else the county would have to pay $40.5 million to modify the tunnel, which is almost half the cost of rebuilding the entire 11 mile trail.
