WASHINGTON – Congress is getting a lot of heat these days from the right and the left for being ineffective and out of touch. But on Wednesday, one lawmaker reached out to help a constituent in a very real — and lifesaving — way.
Michael Brody, a political consultant from Pittsburgh, was innocently standing in the back of the room during a 50th birthday celebration for Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) at Sonoma restaurant when Brody’s hair caught on fire.
At 6-foot-4, his head was just a tad too close to some flames.
“We were gathering for the senator’s birthday and it was a very tight room,” Brody says. “I sort of gave him a little bit of space and backed up against the wall. Unbeknownst to me, there were tea lights above. My hair started to smoke and there was a fire.”
Toomey’s wife, Kris, yelled when she noticed the smoke. The Toomeys “sprang into action” and patted out the flames on the back of Brody’s head.
The victim says he didn’t even feel the fire until after the incident.
Brody says nobody was harmed and he escaped with a full head of hair.
“There were lighthearted jokes passed around. Everyone thought it was funny,” he says. “I thought it was hysterical.”
