Full speed ahead for second phase of Dulles Rail

WASHINGTON — After months of delay, financing for the second phase of the Dulles Rail has been approved. But don’t expect to ride that train any time soon.

The target date for all 23 miles out to Ashburn is 2017, with the first phase to Wiehle Avenue set for late 2013. The second leg of the project will already be underway by then.

Dulles Rail spokeswoman Marcia McAlister says the cost is now pegged at $2.8 billion and part of that will be financed by tolls.

“We’re currently conducting traffic and revenue study of the Dulles Toll Road to determine what those tolls are going to be and we don’t have the results of that study yet,” she says.

The tolls will go up in January from $2 to $2.25, but that is unrelated to the second phase.
