Budget axe could fall on U.Md. sports programs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The budget axe could fall on eight sports programs at the University of Maryland.

A special school commission, appointed by the president of the university, recommends the school eliminate men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track, men and women’s swimming and diving, women’s water polo, men’s tennis and aerobics and tumbling.

The university currently spends more on sports than it takes in. The athletic department facing a budget deficit of more than $4 million this fiscal year.

Athletic scholarships would still be honored.
