WASHINGTON — We may be 2,000 miles away, but Nationals fans are trying to do something for kidnapped catcher Wilson Ramos.
Fans have set up a vigil for Ramos Friday night at 6 p.m. outside Nationals Park.
“I actually got to meet him a few times over the course of the season,” Alicia Durfee says.
She’s one of the fans who arranged the vigil, and says he was “so kind” when they met.
“He even let me make fun of him for being dressed up as a female Smurf and prancing around in a dress. And he was very okay with that,” Durfee says. That was part of Ramos’ rookie hazing.
She picked up the idea for a vigil from another Nats fan on Facebook.
“[Ramos is] all by himself, and he’s scared and we don’t know what’s going on with him. Does he know that there are all of these people all over the world who are caring about him? And I thought this would be a really good way to show that,” she says.
“I’ve always wanted to make a difference for somebody, and even though this isn’t a big thing that I could do — I don’t even know who’s going to see it — it makes me feel really good that I can do something for somebody that I admire and that I really care about.”
The team is not involved in the vigil. They have been instructed not to comment on developments in the investigation, but Major League Baseball’s investigative team is working with Venezuelan authorities.
